Our history

The Central Florida Suns was founded October of 2015 in Orlando, Florida by a Cypress Creek High School football coach named DeAndre Bush, who named the team the Central Florida Suns. He chose “Shine Bright” as the teams official motto.

The Suns’ team name and motto is deprived from the bible and is found in Matthew Chapter 5. The bible states that you should let your light so shine before men - Let your life and faith, be everywhere seen and known. Always, in all societies, in all business, sport, in prosperity and adversity. That they may see your good works and glorify your father which is in heaven — That your good actions will be seen and will lead people to honor God, that they may be won to be Christians and moved to love and serve God as we do.

The team was originally comprised of 10 boys from the Meadow Woods community in both the 8th and 9th grade who had been coached by Coach Bush in the Jr. Magic program at the Meadow Woods Recreation Center. From October to December the team would compete as one 9th grade team until splitting into two separate teams.

In 2016, Deron Davis was recruited as the programs Vice President under DeAndre Bush to help with the growing program that evolved into an organization made up of 3 teams; two boys and one girls team. Both men were practicing Christians who had a vision of building christian character in the lives of children while playing and teaching them the game of basketball. Later Chris Null would join the program as the Girls Athletic Director of the Lady Suns. The teams practiced at the Northwest Community Center, Renaissance Charter and Dover Shores Community Center.

In 2017, Chris Null departed the Central Florida Suns, effectively ending the Lady Suns program, to oversee an Girls basketball program, ECU Orlando. The Suns moved their practices from the Renaissance Charter to Meadow Woods Recreation Center and continued to use Dover Shores Community Center.

In 2018, the Central Florida Suns was embraced by Pastor Jim Book of Kissimmee Christian Church in Kissimmee and from the church’s gymnasium Central Florida Suns grew into an organization made up of 7 teams of children from 3rd grade through 8th grade.

In 2019, Coach Bush would change the name from Central Florida Suns to Florida Suns. The Florida Suns incorporated and under the name Suns Youth Sports Association with a vision of expanding and providing other sports programs such as Football, Baseball, Soccer and Track and Field. In addition to the vision of expansion, the Florida Suns would bring on Jacques Alcime to serve as the Boys Basketball Director.

14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
